Meet Debbie, Our Member of the Month for August

Debbie started working out with us 5 days before the New Year and I AM SO PROUD OF HER! Since starting Debbie has completely transformed herself into what I would call a fitness person. Debbie has some of the most legitimate reasons to not come to the gym but she makes it a priority. A commitment to herself. Debbie is one of those people that can make any class, a fun class. Seeing her name on the attendance sheet brings me joy and I'm always excited to work with her.

A few months ago Debbie asked me what the criteria was to become "member of the month". I told her that there were no specific criteria and she didn't like that answer. From now on, I plan to answer that question with "Be more like Debbie."

Name:

"Debbie Minos."

Occupation:

"I'm the Executive Assistant to the CIO of Ceridian."

How long have you been working out at The VGV?

"I started at the end of December 2016."

What made you decide to try The VGV?

"Pattie's progress, how determined she was to be the best her she could be. We chatted for about 2 years about going and then on Dec 27, 2016, I finally made the decision to try a free class. To take it a step further, every time life became too stressful I got the shingles disease, since starting at The Village Gym Vaughan I have not had a single episode, NOT ONE!!! Truly amazing!"

What is your favourite thing about The Village Gym Vaughan?

"The personal training I receive. The confidence that is injected into me every time I walk through those doors. It's always positive and always encouraging. The size of the class as well, I never feel like just a number."

Favourite exercise?

"Sled pull without a doubt!"

Least favourite exercise?

"Burpee...I am so intimidated by these things, but am determined to get it right and feel confident...one day!"

A year from now, what do you want to be able to do?

"Unassisted chin ups, master burpees, deadlift 200 lbs...EVERYTHING! Every time I see somone doing something new I mean it when I say "I WANT TO DO THAT"."

If you could have one superpower, what would it be?

"To be STRONG."

You’re paying way too much for protein powder!

Hey there!

Being a gym owner, people ask me pretty frequently if the protein powder they just got from the store is good. My answer is almost always; “Yes, it’s good protein, but you probably paid WAY TOO MUCH for it.”

Every supplement store I’ve ever looked at sells 2kg of protein for at least $55 before tax. That’s a rip off if you ask me. I get my protein from CanadianProtein.com for $39.99 before tax.

To not make this post too long, I recommend the “Whey Concentrate” from Canadian Protein. I’ve tried a bunch of flavours and they all taste great.

I wouldn’t recommend the “Economy Whey” as It didn’t taste very good at all. You get what you pay for in its case.

Click the link to check out CanadianProtein.com and specifically my favourite protein available.

Full disclosure, I get a small percentage of money from your order, but I think that’s totally fair since this stuff is actually the best value and protein available and I ACTUALLY use it myself.

Meet Josie, Our Member of the Month for July!

Josie is one of the most consistent members that we've had in the gym. She always works hard in the gym and never complains. BUT the best part about Josie is that she knows that the real weight loss comes with good nutrition and although working out has made Josie way stronger and more defined, a huge part of her success has and is from her nutrition.

Name:

"Josie Talamo."

Occupation:

"I'm an I.T. Support Specialist."

How long have you been working out at The VGV?

Luke - "Josie was a go-getter and started December 29th of last year. I love that she didn't wait until the new year to start!"

What made you decide to try The VGV?

"I was tired of feeling weak and not having any energy. I also wanted to have "me" time and somewhere I could go to release stress. Another reason was that my good friend Pattie recommended The VGV and I figured why not give it a try."

What is your favourite thing about The Village Gym Vaughan?

"My favourite thing is that Luke really knows what he's doing. No matter what my pain or injury is, he knows how to work around it and modify if need be. He also really cares about my success in the gym and also with my weight loss. The encouragement and support is second to none."

"The one with the box and the rings. Can't remember the name but you know which one Luke!." (Ring hamstring curls)

Meet Haley, Our Member of the YEAR and Month of June!

Even though Haley won a bet to claim "Member of the Year" (she somehow did 10 handstand pushups), she is still very deserving of being the Member of the Month for June. We're super proud of how far she has come since day 1 and the effort she has consistently put in to get where she is now.

Meet Sheri, Our Member of the Month for February

Sheri is an absolute blast in the gym. Every single person that has ever worked out with her knows how fun and inappropriate she can be! She is consistently at the top of the list for attendance at the end of the month and when she's in the gym (which is all the time) she always works hard and does what is asked of her even when it's something she doesn't like all that much (cardio). Giving Sheri member of the month status is a no-brainer.

Vivian has been a member of the gym for 4 months now. She is awesome to work with and always works hard with a smile on her face. Since starting at the gym she has lost 14 pounds and increased her strength and fitness immensely. We're very excited to see what great things Vivian can accomplish in the next year!

Occupation:

"I'm a project portfolio manager."

What made you decide to try The VGV?

"I did a trial class over a year ago at Luke's old location. I found him very approachable and knowledgeable plus the workouts were fun and challenging. Unfortunately, work and home life got in the way shortly after and I ended up putting off my fitness plan. One year later, after my 40th birthday, I decided that it was time to finally do something about my health and weight. I called Luke, went for a trial class in his new gym and the rest is history."

What is your favourite thing about The Village Gym Vaughan?

"What I like the most at VGV is the [workout] program and circuit. The program is clearly laid out with repetitions and weights so there is no guessing. The circuit is different each time and it really is the toughest part of the class! But Luke always finds ways to push me to do my absolute best every time. Having to workout alongside friendly, like-minded people also helps with motivation."

What's your favourite exercise?

"My favourite exercise is the deadlift. To me, it's a powerful and functional exercise that gives me a total body workout. I always feel strong after completing a set. "

What's your least favourite exercise?

"Sorry Luke, but it has to be the step up!"

A year from now, what do you want to be able to do?

"In a year, I would like to be able to 1) do an unassisted chin up, 2) do 20 push ups in one go and 3) go rock climbing!"

If you could have one superpower, what would it be?

"My superpower would be to time travel. I'm planning to bring back the sports almanac for 2000-2050. It's on my bucket list."
